Cylinder Boring & Honing
Rebuilding an engine should always include some review over the cylinders. Usage tends to change the original shape into a tapered cylinder this reduces the ring sealing and may increase blowby and oil usage if not fixed. The cylinder may also lose its roundness, scored or may have other defects that require amending before a new set of rings will seal properly.
The main intention when refinishing the cylinders is to make sure the walls are parallel, the bores are round as possible with minimal defects, which can be notably critical with low tension rights, to have the correct amount of crosshatch for optimal oil retention and ring support. Finally to produce a surface finish that meets the requirements of the rings. All of this is done by boring and honing the cylinders in different steps with a variety of abrasives.
